Narratives of Health and Illness

September 16-17, 2010
The Nordic Network Gender, Body, Health
in collaboration with
The Centre for Gender Research, Uppsala University, Sweden

For some time now there has been an exponentially growing interest in investigating the role of stories and storytelling in relation to our understandings of the world, others and ourselves. The notion of narrative has emerged as key in a wide range of disciplines and fields of research. This conference focuses on the role and significance of various forms of narrative in relation to understandings and experiences of health and illness. Presentations from a number of diverse perspectives and research areas will bring to light how grand narratives of culture, history, society and science as well as stories of individual lives contribute to drawing the boundaries between concepts and categories of health, illness, normality and deviance. The conference addresses how different narratives both reinforce and disrupt one another as they come to structure, make sense of, explain and legitimate experience and behavior.

Plenary speakers are Margrit Shildrick from Queens University Belfast, Northern Ireland and Vieda Skultans Shelley from the University of Bristol, Great Britain.

The conference is organized by the Nordic Network Gender, Body, Health in collaboration with the Body/Embodiment group at the Centre for Gender Research, Uppsala University. It is open to anyone interested and participation is free of charge. To participate, please register by September 10 at the latest by sending an email to body@gender.uu.se.
