Representations of family

A one-day Symposium on Monday, December 13, 2010

The featured speakers at the Symposium are Marianne Novy, Professor of English and Women’s Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Caroline Levander, Professor of Humanities and English at Rice University, Houston, Texas, both of whom are leading scholars in American Family Studies.

Professor Marianne Novy has done important work in the field of adoption literature, and is the author of Imagining Adoption: Essays on Literature and Culture (2001), and Reading Adoption: Family and Difference in Fiction and Drama (2005).

Professor Caroline Levander is author of Cradle of Liberty: Race, the Child, and National Belonging from Thomas Jefferson to W. E. B. Du Bois (2006), and editor of The American Child: A Cultural Studies Reader (2003).

In addition to plenary lectures by Professors Novy and Levander, the Symposium program includes research presentations on representations of family in modern and contemporary history, art, film, literature, and political rhetoric.

The Symposium will be followed by a reception.

The Symposium is open to all, and includes coffee and reception with light refreshments
