Updated info: Wednesday's Workshops

Updated information about the four parallel workshops on Wednesday between 14.00-16.00. Read about the workshops and register to the workshop you wish to attend at the Conference desk on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday betweeen 14-00-16.00 you can choose between attending one of the four following workshops:

The physics student laboratory
In this workshop Anna Danielsson and Camille Bélanger-Champagne will let the participants get the opportunity to try out two different types of laboratory exercises; one lab from an advanced physics course and one lab from the teaching material ‘Physics by Inquiry’. The first lab is a short-version of a traditional lab from a course in nuclear and particle physics.  In this lab, students work with weak radioactive sources to explore the properties of particle radiation.  They are also asked to build the necessary setups from available electric circuits components.  The second lab is an introduction to electrical circuits from ‘Physics by Inquiry’, a teaching material developed by physics education researchers at University of Washington. This material has been designed to teach science as a process of inquiry and the focus is on the development of qualitative, scientific reasoning skills. More information can be found on: http://www.phys.washington.edu/groups/peg/pbi.html

For this workshop no previous experience of physics/physics teaching is necessary; the aim is to bring together physicists, physics teachers and gender researchers for discussions about the teaching and learning of physics. The participants work together with the laboratory exercises in groups of three to four (preferably people with different backgrounds). The workshop is wrapped up by a discussion about the participants’ experiences of doing laboratory work in physics.

Programme
Introduction to the laboratory exercises – 10 minutes
Nuclear and particle physics lab (group 1)
Physics by Inquiry (group 2)   – 45 minutes

Augusta Ångström Exhibition
Carla Puglia will be giving a tour at the  Augusta Ångström Exhibition and will also show the Ångström's Cleanroom.

Maximum number of participants: 20 - Register at the Conference desk!

Techniques of disempowerment
Annika Lindé, the Gender Equality Officer of Uppsala University will give a 'hands on' workshop on how to counteract techniques of disempowerment in order to change social climates and facilitate dealing with power structures.

Maximum number of participants: 20 - Register at the Conference desk!

Tour: Wave Power Laboratory
Cecilia Boström will present some of the ongoing research at the division for electricity. A general presentation will be given about the four different projects; wave power, wind power, marine current power and flywheel energy storage. After that, we will go down to our laboratory and see the different generators.

Maximum number of participants: 20 - Register at the Conference desk!

Registration at the Conference desk
You can register to the workshop that you wish to attend at the Conference desk. Each workshop can take up to 20 participants on a first come first served basis. Go to our preliminary programme for more information about these workshops.
